The Bulgarian Stock Exchange Sofia AD has been established as a result of the merger of First Bulgarian Stock Exchange AD and the Sofia Stock Exchange AD on 6 June 1997, licensed by the Securities and Stock Exchanges Commission on 9 October. It started operating on 21 October 1997.
The members of the Bulgarian Stock Exchange-Sofia AD are entities without insolvency procedures initiated against them, answering the following conditions:
- To hold at least 1,000 shares in the capital of the exchange;
- To be investment intermediaries;
- To be members of the Central Depository or to have concluded a contract with a member of the Depository;
- To have labour or service contracts with at least two brokers.
Municipal Bank PLC has been a full member of the BSE-Sofia AD since 1997.
The Bank has authorized three brokers to conclude deals on the floor of BSE-Sofia AD.
Attendance base trading at the BSE-Sofia was replaced in October 2000 by a new trading system: RTS Plaza (Russian Trading System), which was fully automated, and its first version has been developed on the basis of the NASDAQ trading system. The SOFIX index has started being calculated since 20 October 2000. It represents the ratio between the current day market capitalization of the companies in it to the previous day capitalization.
The BSE-Sofia has since the beginning of 2007 officially started the integrated X3 information system developed in cooperation among BSE-Sofia, the Financial Supervision Commission and the Central Depository AD. X3 is a system for electronic sending, receiving, and dissemination of information disclosed by the public companies and the other issuers of securities. The BSE has simultaneously begun quoting and trading of bonds traded on it, at a "clean price".
In June 2007, BSE-Sofia was accepted as a full member of the Federation of European Securities Exchanges (FESE), whose members are only EU-regulated markets recognized by the European Commission.
The Bulgarian Stock Exchange - Sofia AD and Deutsche Börse AG signed a framework agreement on 30 October 2007 for the deployment of the Xetra ® electronic trading system of Deutsche Börse.
